ARTIST STATEMENT |
I studied at the University of Michigan, receiving a BFA and MFA in ceramics and painting. My works have been exhibited in numerous national and international juried shows. I am a signature member of the Gold Coast Watercolor Society and the Taos Society of Watercolorists. My paintings are being shown at Las Comadres Gallery in Taos.
Sometimes I work in monoprint and photography. My paintings are abstractions of subjects in my environment and reflect my love of and respect for nature. I paint for the sake of painting, for the joy of recording my impressions of the world around me in a style in which the colors and forms in the paintings are the most important elements, but without obliterating the visible world.
I have always loved the colors and patterns of the landscapes where I've lived: Germany, Michigan, California, and now, New Mexico. I'm a gardener, and the beauty of trees and fields in different seasons delights me. Farmlands and the preservation of open spaces have been important to me since childhood, and I'm especially drawn to scenes which reflect harmony between people and nature. The houses and churches in my paintings represent a human presence, and the old buildings imply history and tradition. Above all, it is the excitement of the colors in the landscape that I respond to and try to share with the viewer.
